JHR Shared Housing is a program of Jobs, Housing & Recovery, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2001. SBSH offers housing to men in substance abuse recovery who need the support of a group setting as they prepare for independent living. The ten houses located in the Federal Hill area of Baltimore City are each occupied by three or four tenants. These residents come from Carrington House and from other recovery programs. The Shared Housing program provides residents with peer support and comprehensive services as they work to become more independent, self-sufficient, and productive. Two of the houses are reserved for 11 veterans who are served in a special program.
Requirements for admission:
· Satisfactory completion of the application and an intake/rental interview.
· Agreement to abide by all rules and regulations governing the program, including
Zero tolerance policy.
· Attendance at regular group meetings; individual counseling as needed.
· Rent of 30% of gross income.
Services provided:
· Housing for as long as 60 months (average stay is 15 to 20 months).
· Individual and group substance abuse counseling.
· Educational/ vocational assessment and training including opportunities to pursue a GED or college.
· Employment advice and/or access to jobs in businesses formed by JHR and employers in its network, as well as referrals to job placement services.
· Relapse prevention classes and recovery workshops. .
· Access to counseling services after moving from Shared Housing program to independent housing.
Staff: Like all JHR counselors, the Shared Housing program director, is a former substance abuser, who understands the problems of residents first hand and shows by example that recovery really is possible. Consultants with advanced degrees assist with mental health counseling and veterans’ services.
