On Monday, September 20th, 2010 Carrington House Graduates Andrew Faulkenstein and Thomas Hill joined Alumnus Chris Garside on WYPR Radio's "Midday with Dan Rodricks" show.

For nearly an hour, our Graduates shared their stories, recounting in detail the circumstances that led to their addiction and how JHR has helped them to turn their lives around.  34-year-old Chris Garside spoke of how feelings of inadequacy led him to use drugs "to fit in," and" to find pleasure."  Carrington House taught him to delay gratification and accept responsibility for his own actions, putting him on the road to recovery.  "I can barely describe the transforming process of the past two years," he said. "I have experienced random bursts of joy."

At 58, Thomas Hill  is drug-free for the first time in many years.  His addiction began at an early age and continued throughout his life as a husband, father, and truck driver.  He came to Carrington House from JHR's Homeless Resource Center.  "I knew there was something better," he said.

A native of Dundalk, 50-year-old Andrew Faulkenstein was considering suicide when he was referred to Carrington House by the Shepherd-Pratt Institute.  His addiction to alcohol and drugs had damaged his relationship with this family and left him homeless.  Andrew summed up the difference between JHR's Carrington House program and other substance abuse treatment programs he has experienced:  "Other programs showed me how to stop (using.)  Carrington House showed me how to live."
